About the Crow Middle High OGS Program:

Crow Middle/High has a strong "green school" program, conserving resources in a variety of ways. They have a policy to purchase refurbished laptop computers rather than new. The school has reduced its use of paper through double-sided copying. Staff monitors what students print from computers, finding ways to encourage them to use less. The principal reminds staff via email to shut down all mini- appliances, including computers, lights, etc., during holidays and breaks. Lane Electric Solar panels on the school provide supplemental power to their Fine Arts building. LED lighting us used throughout the campus, while timers and sensors keep the lights off when not in use. The custodian is in charge of monitoring and repairing leaky faucets, and electricity consumption is monitored daily. The high school's freshman run the Recycling Team, and the whole school is involved in keeping the campus as clean and green as possible.

How do you publicize your program?

  • Email reminders for staff to shut off all electronics, lights, and unplug any appliances for school breaks/closures.

  • Live feed of Solar Panels on District Website and visual kiosk in front office.

  • Last year we had a Solar Celebration where families and community members toured the school to see student-made solar fountains, mobiles, and other demonstrations of solar powered appliances such as Bar-B-Ques.

  • We had an Afternoon Tea where students made tea from herbs grown in our school garden and a tour of native plants that students planted and learned about.

  • We proudly display our Green School Certificate in the front office.

How does your parent group (PTA/PTO) participate and support your program?

The Booster Club (part of our parent organization) recycles all of their waste generated from the Concessions stand, booster barn, and fundraising activities at events such as the Crow Car Show. They have special blue "Recycle" containers for cans and bottles. We discussed having them purchase 2 more containers to place in the football stands and gymnasium stands to encourage more people to deposit such items in the "Recycle" container.

How do you practice resource conservation in your everyday operations?

How do you integrate resource conservation into extra-curricular events?

On the track/football field and gymnasium we have recycle waste recepticals for plastic bottles and cans.

How have you helped another school with waste reduction education and/or assistance within the last year?

Last year, high school students conducted a research project at Applegate Elementary School to measure the amount of Radon that was being emitted throughout the building. Teams of students wrote up reports, created posters, and presented ideas to the School Board to improve the elementary school and high school facilities. One student went so far as presenting to the Lane ESD Board.


We are in the process of planning a Solar Panel Tour for our Applegate Elementary school students to show case and explain the use of Solar Power at the high school.

Our "School-Wide" policy for reducing waste
(Merit-level Requirement):

Crow Middle/High School is dedicated to the conservation and preservation of natural resources and reducing and reusing whereever possible.  Will are committed to the following:

 

- Save money and resources by reducing the consumption of electricity and eliminating the need to purchase styrofoam trays. These have already been purchased for next year.

 

- By not eating off of styrofoam trays, less chemical will seep into food AND it will reduce land fill.

 

- By composting we will feed our garden important nutritional soil, reduce waste, and teach our students about the importance of where food comes from, and how to care for our planet. Plus, it’s a fun activity that put students out doors.

- Using recycled print cartridges will reduce land fill and save money.

- When we implement our Green Team each school year, students and staff will have more "ownership" of our school because they will be invested in the recycling efforts.

How we Reduce and Reuse:

  • We "Reduce" the use of paper by double side copying. Teachers are trained at the beginning of the school year on how to perform this function on school computers. School printers are in common areas such as the library and faculty room. Our librarian and secretary are great watch dogs of what comes through the printers. We remind teachers to “monitor” and “teach” what to print when doing research reports during Staff Meetings. We have discussed “charging a fee" for students or denying access when abused.

  • We prompt staff via email to shut down all mini appliances, including computers, lights, etc. during holidays and breaks via email.

  • We use 30% Post Consumer Recycled paper as demonstrated on our paper stock packages.

How we Save Energy/Water:

  • This last year we replaced all of our lights in the gym to LED and put them on sensors. This reduced our consumption of electricy a great deal!

  • Last year, through a generous grant from Lane Electric, we installed solar panels over our Fine Arts building. We have a live feed display in our front office and our website.

  • We also replaced an extremely inefficient hot water system for our locker room showers, and installed Energy Star rated equipment. This has saved a lot of water and electricity.

  • The light bulbs in our breezeways have been replaced.

  •  We don't water our lawns during summer. I mentioned above that our hot water heaters were replaced, which reduced the amount of water being heated, which in turn, reduced the amount of water consumed. We have a rain water "catch" on our garden shed to water the garden.

  • We send out emails at breaks reminding staff to shut down computers, unplug all appliances, etc. Our custodian turns off heat and lights throughout campus. We installed brand new LED lights that are on motion detectors in our gymnasium which reduced our elecriticy consumption and bill substantially. We installed brand new Energy Star rated water heaters and plumbing to reduce the amount of water expelled before hot water reaches the showers in the locker rooms.

Current Goals:

Reduce Waste - Goal 1: Eliminate styrofoam trays from cafeteria starting 2015-16 school year.

Steps-to-Achieve: 

(1)  The trays have already been purchased. Over summer we will buy tray totes to transport the trays to and from the Elementary school for sanitizing. (2) Train students on how to responsibly use new lunch trays.

Reduce Waste - Goal 2: Compost more by managing food waste during both breakfast and lunch.

Steps-to-Achieve: 

Have a stainless steal bowl out w/utinsel for scraps. Have signage of what can and can not be deposited into bowl for "compost."

Recycling - Goal 1: Recycle print cartridges.

Steps-to-Achieve: 

Create a school policy to not release a new cartridge until we have the old cartridge packaged and ready to be recycled.

Recycling - Goal 2: Recycle our milk cartons.

 

Steps-to-Achieve: 

Use sink or bucket for dumping excess milk, have sink ready to rinse carton, then put in tray or student made rack to dry out carton--lunch volunteers (students) can manage this.

Energy - Goal 1: Replace all exterior lights in breezeways to LED

Steps-to-Achieve: 

The financing and ordering is in place to do over summer.

Energy - Goal 2: Replace the lights in the "Upper Gym" with photo sensors.

Steps-to-Achieve: 

We are working toward getting a Bond on the Ballot for next November.

Water - Goal 1: Get new drinking fountains that don't leak.

Steps-to-Achieve: 

They have been ordered. They will be installed this summer. 2 of the fountains have Water Bottle Capacity. One will be placed in the main school wing, and the other near the gym. 2 other regular drinking fountains will be installed this summer in the high school and upper wing.

Water - Goal 2: Continue to replace leaky water fixtures and flush valves.

Steps-to-Achieve: 

Maintenance is "on-going" at our building and district.
